the location was very nice, at walking distance of the Bund and the view from some rooms is great especially at night. The hotel is a lot of old glory and if it would be done up nicely it would be a magnificent place to be. The western food restaurant had very good western meals.

Unfortunately, the hotel is a bit neglected at parts (the room we stayed in). This includes not very clean. The bed was typically chinese: very hard

This hotel is a unique part of Shanghai's history and heritage, and is extremely well located. Very few places offer such an opportunity !

The hotel is an old glory, not investing to keep high quality. Breakfast cannot be called as such. Room indicated as deluxe is hardly comfortable with only tiny windows. Water pressure is insufficient, and warm water stopped altogether the last day !

    Superb

I liked the interesting, old world atmosphere of the hotel. The staff members were polite, attentive and helpful. The room was big and spacious and the furniture was tastefully chosen. I loved the high ceilings and classy wooden floorboards.

I didn't like the fact that the restaurant in the lobby area allowed smoking. I think there should be a no-smoking policy for such restaurants.

    Very good

We found the hotel building was full of historical character - cavernous hotel, massive rooms (and I mean massive with ceiling more than 5-metre high). The location was good for us even though the nearest metro (East Nanjiing Road) is about 15 mins walk and in the August heat. It can be killing. We liked its location at the top end The Bund. The super spacious room meant that it was relaxing once we got in. Loved the french windows leading to wrought iron balcony and that the room was not over-furnished. The discounted price we paid was fine, wouldn't want to pay more than that. We walked a lot in Shanghai and if not, getting a cab is easy enough.

The hotel and our room did smell musty and that first day it got me down but soon we discovered its character and space. Front desk staff was pretty slow and not particularly friendly (perhaps language issue). We nicknamed one person Ms Kommandante because she barked: Passport! The cleaning staff were friendly. We didn't bother to complain to the hotel that the toilet roll holder kept falling off because it the plastic roll didn't fit properly into the porcelain wall holder or that the bathmat had mould (better not to have bathmat). Or that there was a nail clipping from previous occupant on the rug. We noticed a damp mouldy patch above one air condition outlet, scuffed floorboards, balcony rail that hadn't been painted for a long time and in fact the rain had damaged the wood, that the panelling on the french windows was plastic wood. But don't let us put you off (the above are comments NOT complaints) - for the price, incredible space (at least 5x more than a standard hotel room) and that's not counting the bathroom, historical character and location, what is there to complain? In all we were there 5 nights not 3.

    Fabulous

Aster House is one of the oldest hotels in Shanghai. The building still has its historic charm with high ceilings and appointments. Our large room had a view of two rivers. The bathrooms have been updated. The staff were friendly and helpful. We ate in their main dining room as well as in their small cafe in the lobby. The food was good and well priced.

There was no wifi in the bedrooms. There was wifi in the public areas but it was down for most of the time we were there.

    Superb

Historically interesting, helpful & friendly, english speaking. Great location, value for money.

As it is an old hotel (150 years old) the lift did not go to ground level, but to be fair, the porters carried the luggage so only a minor problem.

As one of the oldest hotels in Shanghai it is a great palce to connect to the histroy of the city and a period now almost lost amongst the skyscrapers.

    Fabulous

Very good value for money for central Shanghai and just at the start of the Bund. Very large room. Breakfast room was very impressive and a good choice of Chinese breakfast- choice not so good if you are looking for a western style breakfast

Lots of noise from traffic in room as the hotel is situated on a busy road junction and we could hear the horns from the buses all night. The hotel has obviously seen better days with dated decor, dusty curtains and dirty carpet but the good size of the room and bathroom meant it still felt comfortable despite dated decor and was v good value for money. No chairs in the lobby and nowhere nice to linger downstairs but wifi was only available in the lobby....
